NCSU introduces 'Wolfpack Promise' as scholarships

now cover full cost of attendance

After the NCAA passed a rule that scholarship athletes should receive coverage for the full cost of attendance, not just tuition and fees, N.C. State University on Tuesday introduced the "Wolfpack Promise," which details the extent of services, resources and opportunities available to NCSU student-athletes.
The Wolfpack Promise doesn't introduce any new rules this week, per se, but does lay out the changes to scholarships going forward.
At NCSU, for example, tuition and fees come to $8,296 annually, but the university financial aid office estimates the full cost of attendance at $22,954 annually. In Chapel Hill, UNC estimates the full cost of attendance at $24,120 annually. Duke University estimates the full cost at $63,530 annually, with the majority of the variance coming from the $47,488 annual tuition.
To be sure, NCSU and other universities may still offer partial scholarships as well. Partial scholarships pay for specific annual amounts and/or a percentage of educational costs. Full athletic scholarships are provided to cover the complete cost of attendance associated with earning an undergraduate degree, including tuition, room, board, books, fees, insurance, transportation and permissible/miscellaneous expenses.
"Our goal and responsibility is to help our student-athletes realize their full potential, both academically and athletically," said Director of Athletics Debbie Yow in a statement. "The Wolfpack Promise reflects the scope of resources N.C. State Athletics provides for our student-athletes to help them reach their goals."
Related, NCSU expects to open new athletics facilities soon, including the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility, which will be completed this spring, and a $35 million renovation to Reynolds Coliseum, which will begin in March.
